Your Apple Card earns different cash back depending on how you pay: 3% at Apple and select merchants with Apple Pay, 2% on other Apple Pay purchases, and 1% with the physical titanium card or anywhere Apple Pay isn’t accepted.
When Kudos recommends your best card for a purchase, it uses the Apple Card’s 1% rate. Here’s why.
Not every store accepts Apple Pay, and there isn’t a reliable, up-to-date list of the ones that do. If Kudos assumed you’d always earn 2%, it could recommend your Apple Card at a store where Apple Pay isn’t an option, and you’d earn only 1%. Using 1% keeps recommendations accurate everywhere.
What this means at checkout
If you’re paying with Apple Pay, your Apple Card earns at least 2%. In that case it beats any card that earns less than 2% on that purchase, even if Kudos suggests a different card.
For example, if Kudos recommends a card that earns 1.5% everywhere, but you’re checking out with Apple Pay, your Apple Card will earn more.
If you’re shopping somewhere with bonus categories, like dining or groceries, it’s still worth checking Kudos. A card earning 3% or more in that category will beat your Apple Card.
