Why does my browser indicate that the Kudos extension can “read and change” all my data?

Why browsers display a broad "read and change" permission warning when installing the Kudos extension, and what data Kudos actually accesses on supported sites.

Updated this week

It's a fair question and a good one to ask before installing any browser extension.

The short answer: that warning is standard browser language applied to every extension, regardless of what it actually does. It doesn't reflect the specific, limited access Kudos uses.

What Kudos actually does (and doesn't) access

The Kudos extension only reads page information on supported shopping and issuer websites to calculate your potential rewards, surface card-linked offers, and recommend the best card at checkout.

That's it. Kudos does not:

  • Track your browsing on unrelated websites

  • Read or store your usernames or passwords

  • Access data in the background when you're not on a supported site

Why does the browser warning sound so broad then?

Browsers like Chrome and Safari use a one-size-fits-all permission model. The "read and change data" message is displayed for any extension that needs to interact with webpage content, even if that interaction is narrow and specific. There's no way for an extension to show a more precise message at install time; the browser controls that language.

What about Mobile Safari on iOS?

The same principle applies. Safari on iOS displays similar permission prompts when you enable the Kudos extension. The actual data practices are identical to the desktop version: limited to supported sites, and only when you're actively using them.
