Automatic, assumed, and manual credits: how Kudos tracks each one

Kudos tracks card credits in three ways: automatically, as assumed credits you confirm, or manually for perks you redeem with the provider. Here's how each works and what to do.

The Benefits Tracker keeps an eye on the credits and perks across every card in your wallet. Not every benefit can be tracked the same way, though. Depending on the benefit, Kudos tracks it in one of three ways: automatically, as an assumed credit, or manually.

Knowing which type a benefit is tells you whether you need to do anything to keep your tracker accurate.

⚡ Automatic credits

Most credits track automatically. When you pay with a linked card at a merchant that matches one of your benefits, Kudos detects the purchase and the statement credit, and marks the credit as Redeemed for you.

For automatic tracking to work:

  • Your card account needs to be connected in Kudos.

  • There needs to be a clear match between your purchase and the credit, like a dining purchase at an eligible restaurant.

What you need to do: Nothing. Just use the card you want the credit on.

🔍 Assumed credits

For some benefits, Kudos can't connect directly to the merchant account, so it can't confirm on its own that the credit landed. Uber Cash on certain cards is a common example.

For these, Kudos looks at your spending and estimates that you likely received the benefit. The credit shows as Assumed until you confirm it. Once you confirm, Kudos marks it as used for that period.

What you need to do: Open the benefit in the Benefits Tracker and confirm whether you actually got it.

✋ Manual credits

Some benefits are manual by design. These are usually membership-style perks you activate directly with the provider, like a complimentary DashPass, Lyft Pink, or CLEAR Plus membership. They aren't tied to a purchase Kudos can match to your card, so they can't be detected automatically.

What you need to do:

  1. Activate the perk with the provider first.

  2. Open the benefit in the Benefits Tracker.

  3. Toggle it as redeemed so your tracker stays accurate.

Toggled something by mistake? You can undo it anytime. Open the benefit and toggle it off, and it goes back to its previous status.

You can also use the manual toggle for credits Kudos couldn't see. For example, if you used a credit before your transaction history starts, or if your card is linked as an authorized user account. See How to Track Your Credit Card Benefits and Credits with Kudos and Why are my credits showing as unused? for those cases.

🧭 How to tell which type a benefit is

Open the benefit's detail page in the Benefits Tracker to see whether it tracks automatically, needs your confirmation, or needs a manual toggle.

As a quick rule of thumb:

  • Statement credits at a specific merchant usually track automatically.

  • Credits paid into a separate merchant account, like Uber Cash, are usually assumed.

  • Memberships and subscriptions you activate with the provider are usually manual.
